Benbecula to North Uist
I drove to North Uist and Berneray on Wednesday to meet up with my friends Jenny and her sister in law, Anne. Anne has never visited the Uists before. We had lunch at Lochmaddy Hotel and a good catch up before driving to Hebridean Jewellery on South Uist. Unfortunately, as they had a ferry to catch we only had 10 mins there. At least Anne could say she had been on 4 of the islands!
On Thursday I spent the whole day at the RSPB nature reserve at Balranaid. This is a must for a day out, even if you are not into birds. There is a small snack shop at the camp site near the visitor centre which is open from 11am to 3pm. A good walk on the beach and take in the nature trail, where you will be bombed by arctic terns and can view the beautiful machair.
I checked into my B & B at Rushlee House in Lochmaddy before going out to dinner at Langlass Lodge. This was recommended by my hosts at Borve B & B. A lovely dinner with view. I did stop here on Wednesday to book the dinner and had a coffee. Coffee very overpriced at £3.00 for a single espresso. As it wasn't from a proper machine it wasn't up to standard. I spent an evening searching for otters as I had a tip from a couple I met at the reserve. There was one at Kallin harbour. I didn't find it - probably too late. However, had a good view of 3 owls and a sunset.
I had half and hour before returning to my B & B so decided to walk to Hut of Shadows - a camera obscura in Lochmaddy. A couple on the way back told me there was an otter ahead. A few images of the otter below but at a distance.
Now off to catch the ferry to Harris for my week at Scarista. Not sure of when I will be on internet again.
