Vietnam and Cambodia Part VI - Beng Mealea
Beng Mealea is about an hour from Siem Riep but gives you a chance to see the countryside. This temple looks as if it has just been discovered and my favourite. We saw lots of children on our way in, before being accosted by an unofficial guide. He was very good and we had to be careful as you had to climb over lots of stones to get to the good bits. About half way around we realised that all the children were also guides. Very much Fagin's children, as Linda christened them.
After a swim and a chill at the hotel (Penny and I went into Siem Riep and visited the Angkor Wat museum), we set off again by tuk tuk for the sunset on Angkor Wat. We should have listened to our driver, who told us there was no sunset that evening. We walked up a hill to another temple, saw Angkor Wat in the mist, talked to the elephants who took tourists up the hill, and came down again.
