We arrived in Da Nang in the late afternoon and transferred to the Chu hotel which we had booked via Bookings.com. It was by the beach on the outskirts of Da Nang. We planned to stay the night there and then move on to Hoi An. After discussion we decided to stay on at the Chu hotel. We booked a taxi to take us to the Ba Na hills, the next day and were driven by the slowest driver ever.
We took the cable car up to this old French resort which had temples, pagodas, a large budda and ruins. Very picturesque but was spoilt by a huge fantasy castle which had been built. We were the only westerners there. Friday was a big holiday and it was crowded.

These tourists get everywhere! |
After we came down, we were dropped off at Da Nang station. We had tried to book tickets on the Reunification Express to Hue but it appeared we could not buy tickets until Monday. Not only could we have bought tickets at the weekend but they were much cheaper buying them direct from the station then from the internet. We decided to stick to our original plan and go to Hue on Monday. We then had a stroll in the heat around Da Nang and found the riverside and the statues. After a fruitless search for a restaurant recommended by Lonely Planet, we ate at Tony's Cafe near the dragon bridge. Despite the name, it was a local cafe and we had a hearty meal for about £3. The best part of the day was watching the light show on the three bridges. I hadn't seen this mentioned anywhere in the tourist stuff but was a great free show.
