6 weeks on Lewis Part 3

A week on Lewis has rushed by and still no otter.  Yesterday, I set off for Stornoway.  I had booked to listen to Jenny Colgan at her cocktail hour, as part of the Hebridean Book Festival.  I decided to attend her session at 2pm on her Doctor Who book, writing as Jenny T Colgan.   As I was about to go in to An Lanntair where the festival was taking place, I noticed something unusual - take a look at the photos below.

Both sessions stimulating but I had to do something in between.  I went to Point, a place on Lewis, I have never visited.  The sun was setting and there was snow on the peaks on the mainland.

From Stornoway, it was a rush back to Breacleit as the community had a bonfire and fireworks.  I was just in time to snap some quick photos of the fireworks (but not time to get properly focused - that is my excuse), before a lovely supper at the community hall.

I finally did the Valasay to Bosta circular walk 4.5km to Bosta around the coast then back on the road.  I last did this in the sunshine in 2007 with Chris Ryan (Out and About tours).

On Monday I met up with my friend Jenny and her sister in law Anne at the Woodlands Cafe in Stornoway.  A good place for coffee and lunch.  I took a detour, on the way home, onto the scenic Grimshader to Luirbost road.

Are you taking me or the view?

Unlikely to do anything today as the wind is fierce and the rain is not letting up.  I can just about see the garden in front of the house.

The sun was out on Wednesday, together with wind and rain.  I went to the Butt of Lewis to view the waves at the lighthouse and the harbour.  I now have plenty of wave images - I have only subjected you to a few.

On the way back I passed a lorry and received a chip to the windscreen.  I am waiting in today for a call from Stornoway's equivalent to Autoglass.  The sun is out and I want to walk to the Norse mill in Breacleit but don't want to lose my phone signal.  Decisions, decisions.  Maybe the otter will visit while I am waiting.

I eventually went out just after 12 noon.  Reached the post office in Breacleit and the rain came in.  Luckily I was waterproofed except for my trousers.  I snapped the cottage as I was leaving and then a scene of a loch and hills on the way back, so you can see the difference in weather.  Better photos of the cottage and details can be found on

Finally managed to get an appointment with Autoglass in Stornoway, for Friday.  Picked up Jenny on the way, fixed the car,  had lunch in Stornoway then went out to Tolsta for a walk along the beach.  Had a cup of tea with Anne and Donald at Tolsta and came home.

I am not sure of the bird - juvenile gannet or a skua.
