Isle of Lewis in August - Part II
Our trip to Harris was a great success. Jenny and I stopped off at Skoon Art Cafe for an excellent coffee - best on Harris and topped the best from last year on Lewis (Callanish Visitor centre). Shortbread was good too. Bought a mini picture of the machair to add to my collection of Andrew's paintings.
Had a coffee at Callanish and went off to photograph the stones again. I haven't included them here as they feature so much in past posts. Noticed that the Blackhouse Tearooms was for sale. This has been empty for 10 years. An open door just had to be entered and photographs taken.
Drove to Blue Pig to check out their gift items and then finally managed to see Norman in Carloway. Norman gave me the full talk on weaving in Lewis. Although the tweed is called Harris tweed - 95% of the weavers are on Lewis. If you are on the island, pop in and see Norman and buy some tweed from him.
In the evening we had a meal at Auberge. Beforehand, Murdo took as for a drive to the end of the road and we stopped off at Mangersta to see the grave of Dr Linda Norgrove - see below.
On Saturday we said farewell to Angus, Tracy, Jonathan and Charlotte from the ferry terminal - queue more photos. Then Jenny and I went to Ness to do the walk to the Temple at the old villages of Skigersta and Filiscleitir.
A lovely last walk with Jenny, Murdo and dogs to Sandig, Lewis, another deserted village.
Flew off the island on Monday. Still more places to see and photograph on Lewis and Harris. Hope to return next year for a longer visit to the Outer Hebrides - traveling through all the islands.
