Lake Garda and Oberammergau

Another excellent journey with Great Rail Journeys. The main reason was to see the Passion Play at Oberammergau but we had some other scenic places to visit first. We started out at St Pancras which mum had not visited since it reopened. I showed her around which was an excuse for me to take photos.

I was delighted to see one of the elephants which are now around London and then of course had to take the usual snaps of the station.

The next pic is taken from the coach. It is the only building of it's kind in Europe. Rubbish is burnt here by some new technology and the heat generated heats the houses in the area. The water feature was in the Hotel Acquaviva where we stayed in Rivoltella on the shore of Lake Garda.

On day 3 we went off to Milan to see the painting of the Last Supper. First we stopped off at the castle in Milan and I spotted a bird of prey in the tower. I am not sure what it is. There were also some very well fed cats living in the dry moat around the castle. There must have been hundreds of them.

I took a few more but there are only so many cats you can include in a travel blog!

The group waiting for the coach by the dancing fountain.

We were divided into two groups to view The Last Supper. No photos allowed of course so I had to make do with photos of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

Tram outside La Scala.

The 19th century glass-roofed shopping arcade, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and the Duomo.

We then had a day at leisure which mum and I chose to spend at Sirmione. This is a pretty, medieval town on the southern shores of the lake. We decided not to take the boat trip as the forecast was for rain. As it was, we had a mostly sunny day. Plenty of opportunities to take photos here and there is enough to do for a whole day including a trip around the imposing 13th century castle, the Rocca Scaligera. Free entry to the castle and Roman ruins for the over 65.

The next few are images from the day in Venice

On the last day in Italy, mum and I spent time at the 'beach' at the hotel. Mum spotted this gull with a large fish which he kept dropping.

On to Murnau where we stayed at the Alpenhof Murnau. Beautiful countryside around and I definitely could have done with 2 or 3 more days here. Definitely one to come to for walking in the flower meadows. The statues are some of many in the hotel grounds. The shrine is a short walk from the hotel but rain meant it was quite dark when I took the photo. I must return!

The Passion Play theatre

No photos of the play unfortunately. I bought two books, one of photos and the other about the village and its Passion Play.

One of the many murals in the village

On to Koln and the way home. We stayed at the Wasserturm hotel which was unusual. The leisure centre was taken from our hotel room.
